World famous fans

Antwerp may not have a fashion week like Paris, London, Milan or New York, but Antwerp's fashion still manages to capture the attention of international celebrities. For example, Tilda Swinton often wears creations by Haider Ackermann. Kanye West, in turn, is a fan of Vetements, the label founded by Demna Gvasalia, and Martin Margiela. Former first lady Michelle Obama, Beyoncé and Jake Gyllenhaal have been spotted in creations by Dries Van Noten. And Madonna recently showed off an outfit by Walter Van Beirendonck on her Instagram account.

Now, Florentina Leitner can add herself to the list of Antwerp designers worn by a superstar. Leitner designed the outfit during the coronavirus lockdown on behalf of the city of Antwerp and in collaboration with the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and Tom Eerebout, Lady Gaga's stylist. In the past, Lady Gaga has adorned creations by other up-and-coming talent from Antwerp, such as a ring by Dries Criel and a coat by Casper Werner. This most recent post confirms that she is a true fan of Antwerp fashion.

Fashion city Antwerp

Antwerp breathes fashion. It manages to combine, without complexity, tradition with avant-garde and fixed values with fresh talent, like no other city in Europe. Antwerp is the epicentre of Belgian fashion as well as a breeding ground for inspiration and craftsmanship. The Antwerp Academy attracts unconventional talent from all over the world. The city creates the ideal conditions for cross-fertilisation between musicians, fashion designers, designers and visual artists.

Antwerp is more compact than the huge urban centres of the world and is therefore more personal. Fashion lovers can discover Antwerp's fashion story on foot; concept stores, flagship stores of renowned designers, vintage shops and shops by young designers are all within walking distance of each other.
