Privacy & Terms of use

The personal data that you share is processed by the City of Antwerp, Grote Markt 1, 2000 Antwerp. For the City of Antwerp, digital communication and service provision is the basic principle. We do this with respect for your privacy. You can read more about this here.

1. Privacy

1.1. Why a privacy policy?

The City of Antwerp is committed to protecting your privacy. The privacy policy provides you with insight into how the City processes your data.

1.2. Privacy principles

The principles that form the basis of the City’s digital strategy are also applied by the City in its privacy policy:

  • the user takes centre stage: you, as user, remain the owner of your data. If you do not want the City to use your data or link information, you can always indicate this. However, if you want to enjoy particular services, it is inevitable that the City will ask for data. The necessary data are then used in the context of improving the service provision; subject, of course, to compliance with the relevant statutory standards
  • the City wants to communicate with you in the most personalised way possible: if the City asks for data, it is in order to offer you an efficient and personalised user experience. Personalised communication makes the information more relevant for you. For instance, if the City knows your age or interests, it can provide you with more targeted information and also in the manner that you prefer, e.g. via e-mail, text message or notification;
  • everything is interconnected: surfing behaviour, preferences, use of A-kaart, are all sources of interesting data, data that can improve the efficiency and relevance of the City’s services and communication. Combining these improves your ease of use. But it is always your choice whether or not you want all this information linked;
  • digital is transparent: the City uses your data transparently, indicating when and why certain data will be used.
  • Pursuant to REGULATION (EU) 2016/679 of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data and repealing Directive 95/46/EC, you have a right to communicate or correct your data. You can exercise these rights by contacting us at webmaster@ondernemeninantwerpen.be. Furthermore, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority, this being the Data Protection Authority, if you believe that your data are being incorrectly processed.

More information about the federal Data Protection Authority, the privacy law and the General Data Protection Regulation can be found on https://www.dataprotectionauthority.be/

1.3 Protection of your data

Naturally, the City takes all necessary precautions to protect your data as much as possible. The City also does not share with or provide your data to other organisations or bodies unless we are required to do so by law or you have given your consent to do so.

Has there been fraud or hacking of personal data held by the City? Or have you seen the data wrongly distributed anywhere?  If so, please contact us via info@visitantwerpen.be.

4. Accessibility

Given the City’s focus on digital communication, antwerpen.be is accessible to as many residents of Antwerp as possible. Under the banner of ‘e-inclusion’, the City has taken a number of initiatives to ensure this accessibility. During the development phase, for example, the City had user tests performed by residents of Antwerp with little to no digital experience. Qualitative and quantitative surveys of (parts of) the website are also performed regularly.

Blind and visually impaired people also tested the site using their own reading and magnification software. In the meantime, we are working towards the WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
